Tony Fisher, Senior Partnership Member
Senior Partner Tony Fisher is the head of the commercial department. He undertakes Company/Commercial and partnership work, advises charities and educational establishments, and is engaged in the firm’s international practice. He has wide experience in mergers and acquisitions, corporate re-structuring, and drafting and negotiating commercial contracts. He is also a CEDR accredited mediator.
Fisher Jones Greenwood has been recommended by the Legal 500 Guide for its work in Corporate and Commercial Law and clients of Tony Fisher say he is ‘an excellent person to work with’. He has an MBA in Legal Practice and is a member of various trade and business organisations including the Institute of Directors and the International Division of the Law Society. Locally, Tony is a trustee and company secretary of firstsite, a visual arts trust which occupies a new visual arts centre in Colchester designed by Rafael Vinoly.
Aside from his commercial work, Tony also undertakes international and domestic human rights work and has appeared as an advocate in the European Court of Human Rights on many occasions. He is a Fellow of the Human Rights Centre at the University of Essex and is a member and former Chair of the Human Rights Committee of the Law Society of England and Wales. He also sits on the Council of the Law Society as the representative for the Essex constituency.

Mike Theeman, Partnership Member
Mike is the one of the firm's Commercial property partners and specialises in development sites and the acquisition and disposal of commercial property both leasehold and freehold. He is also a trained and experienced mediator. Educated locally at the Colchester Royal Grammar School and Essex University, before studying Law at Guildford, Mike has many connections and interests in and around Colchester. His experience in advising established and newly formed businesses is regularly called upon to guide potential tenants and buyers through the property maze.

Chris Yemm, Managing Partnership Member
Chris is a partnership member and is Head of the Civil Litigation department. He has been a Deputy District Judge and holds a Masters Degree in Advanced Litigation. He is also a CEDR accredited Mediator accustomed to resolving disputes through negotiation and agreement. Chris and his wife keep horses, pigs sheep, dogs and chicken on their smallholding in Suffolk as a result of which he understands and is well placed to advise on practical problems involving the Environment Agency, Rural Payments Agency and DEFRA including the latter’s immensely unpopular proposals to levy a charge on livestock to cover the cost of all outbreaks of disease even if again caused by them!

James Burkett, Partnership Member
After many years working in the City as a consultant James joined the firm in 2001 and is now a Partnership Member. He has a first class law degree and has successfully completed the Civil Academic Training and Assessment in Procedure, Evidence and Ethics, and Civil Academic Training for the purpose of applying for Higher Rights of Audience as a Solicitor Advocate. He currently undertakes commercial litigation work and advises on other matters which include administrative law, private international law, off-shore trusts, option agreement disputes, employment issues, professional negligence claims, banking and construction disputes, as well as advising clients on complex legal issues. James also has considerable experience in Chancery work and Court of Appeal work and is a member of The Professional Negligence Lawyers’ Association and the Civil Litigation Section of the Law Society. James is recommended in the Legal 500 guide 2010 for Commercial Litigation.

Ellen Petersen, Partnership Member
Ellen Petersen, specialises in the acquisition of land for business development and investment purposes, planning and infrastructure agreements, business sales and purchases, commercial leases and business opportunities in the rural and agricultural sectors. She has a further interest in commercial development and planning.
In the rural sector, Ellen’s clients include both local and regional agricultural and farming businesses. Ellen also advises a leading national provider of specialist learning disability services in Scotland, England and Wales in the acquisition of properties which will be designated for supported living purposes and is involved in the acquisition of bare land for development for supported living and care home accommodation. She is based at our Charter Court office on Severalls Business Park.

Hannah Graves, Solicitor
Hannah is Head of the Immigration and Public Law team and is a solicitor specialising in all aspects of general and commercial immigration, asylum law, human rights and community care. She routinely assists clients with immigration visas under the Points Based System, appeals relating to employment and business, students and visas for dependent relatives, spouses, other family members and children. In particular, Hannah specialises in cases involving complex issues, applications outside the rules and challenging Home Office rules and policy, by way of Judicial Review in the High Court.
Hannah also specialises in cases involving EU free movement rights for individuals and their family members, establishment of businesses and provision of services for overseas clients. Hannah has experience of acting for businesses in relation to defending against liability for civil penalties and Judicial Review of suspension of Sponsor Licences.
Her other specialist areas include public law, including community care, continuing care, Judicial Review and High Court litigation. She represents clients to assist them in exercising their rights to support and services, resolving funding and other disputes between the individual, the National Health Service, NASS and Social Services.
Hannah obtained her first degree in English literature and went on to study law at the University of East Anglia. Hannah is supervisor of the firm's public law and community care legal aid franchises, she also provides training and editorial to a number of agencies and publications.
Hannah has been ranked in the Chambers Guide 2012 as a Leader in the Field of Public Law and Human Rights, the Guide states that Hannah “offers expertise in handling contentious matters against public bodies and the state. She is especially heralded for her work within the complex crossover of asylum and child care, and observers note that she is "prepared to take on difficult issues" and is "extremely dogged, but incredibly personable and she often manages to achieve what the client needs whilst avoiding it going to court." The Chambers Guides for 2010 and 2011 also ranked Hannah as an Associate to Watch and described her as an incredibly hard-working lawyer who advises on the full range of human rights issues. According to clients, she is "tireless in her passion for protecting human rights and dignity." and a “talented and skilful lawyer with excellent client care skills.”

Ashton Carter, Solicitor
Ashton is a Solicitor in the commercial team based at Charter Court. He studied for his law degree at the University of Essex, qualifying with a strong 2.1 honours degree in 2008.
He then qualified from BPP Law School with a Commendation for the Legal Practice Course (LPC) in 2009. His chosen electives whilst at Law School were Private Acquisitions, Equity Finance and Advanced Commercial Property and he obtained a commendation award in Business Law.
Ashton is particularly interested in commercial, company and partnership work, including drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, acquisitions and working with charities. Ashton also undertakes commercial litigation work and assists the employment team.

Cate Hammett, Trainee Solicitor
Cate is a trainee solicitor in the employment team. She studied for an English and History degree at the University of Hertfordshire and gained her BA in 2005. Since then she has worked in full time advertising sales whilst completing the GDL (converting her degree to a law qualification) and Legal Practice Course (LPC), which she completed in June 2012.

A paralegal in our Commercial Law team, Lawrence graduated from University of Kent with a 2:1 Law Degree in 2011 and gained his LPC at College of Law in 2012 studying electives in Commercial Law, Employment Law and Advanced Property.
Lawrence is based at our Charter Court office on the Colchester Business Park. His role is varied, providing general support to the Commercial and Employment teams.
