Tony Fisher, Senior Partnership Member
Senior Partner Tony Fisher is the head of the commercial department. He undertakes Company/Commercial and partnership work, advises charities and is engaged in the firm’s international practice.
Tony has extensive experience in the education sector and has advised a number of schools and colleges in relation to governance issues, public benefit and other charitable matters, and contractual issues which face schools. He has acted on the sale of independent schools and also has extensive experience of drafting and negotiating public sector tenders, and collaborative joint ventures.
Fisher Jones Greenwood has been recommended by the Legal 500 Guide and clients of Tony Fisher say he is ‘an excellent person to work with’. He has an MBA in Legal Practice and is a member of various trade and business organisations including the Institute of Directors and the International Division of the Law Society. Locally, Tony is a trustee and company secretary of firstsite, a visual arts trust which occupies a new visual arts centre in Colchester designed by Rafael Vinoly. He is also a Board member of the Colchester Institute, a large further education college with sites in Colchester, Clacton, Braintree and Maldon.

Mike Theeman, Partnership Member
Mike is the one of the firm's Commercial property partners and specialises in development sites and the acquisition and disposal of commercial property both leasehold and freehold.
Educated locally at the Colchester Royal Grammar School and Essex University, before studying Law at Guildford, Mike has many connections and interests in and around Colchester. His experience in advising established and newly formed businesses is regularly called upon to guide potential tenants and buyers through the property maze.

Ellen Petersen, Partnership Member
Ellen Petersen specialises in the acquisition of land for business development and investment purposes, planning and infrastructure agreements, business sales and purchases, commercial leases and business opportunities in the rural and agricultural sectors. She has a further interest in commercial development and planning. In the rural sector, Ellen’s clients include both local and regional agricultural and farming businesses.
Ellen has much experience in the education sector and advises schools in relation to property affairs, charitable matters and contract work. She is also a school governor.
Ellen also advises a leading national provider of specialist learning disability services in Scotland, England and Wales in the acquisition of properties which will be designated for supported living purposes and is involved in the acquisition of bare land for development for supported living and care home accommodation. She is based at our Charter Court office on Severalls Business Park.

Katy Fordham, Solicitor
Katy is a Solicitor in our Commercial Law team. She completed her LPC at the London College of Law and her law degree at the University of Surrey.
Katy has particular expertise in acquisitions, partnership work and drafting and negotiating commercial contracts. Intellectual property is of interest to Katy who works on matters including the registration and enforcement of intellectual property rights together with drafting and negotiating licensing and confidentiality agreements. Katy also undertakes Commercial Litigation including general disputes such as contractual claims and the recovery of debts. Katy is based at our Charter Court office on Severalls Business Park.

Samantha Hale, Solicitor
Samantha started her legal career working at Maxwell Gillott a niche firm of solicitors specialising in Education, Social care and Health care Law. The majority of her experience at the firm was within Education Law.
After qualification, Sam joined Fisher Jones Greenwood LLP in January 2010 and began working within the education team. Her work within the team includes working for both Legally Aided and Private Clients and has included advising schools as well as parents. Sam’s experience within the education team is varied and has included advice on school policies, data protection, work within the First-tier Tribunal (Special Educational Needs and Disability) including work for a school who found themselves involved in a complex Tribunal case, breach of contract, admissions, transport, exclusions, special educational needs and discrimination

Beth Baird, Solicitor
Beth holds two first class degrees in English from Warwick University and converted to law in 2005. Before qualifying as a solicitor in 2009, she worked in both the manufacturing and financial services sectors, latterly as a senior equity analyst for several well-known investment banks. Beth joined FJG in early 2007 and is the firm’s expert on employment matters, advising Companies, Organisations and Charities on their contentious and non-contentious employment law issues on a day to day basis, and she provides regular advice to clients regarding their compliance with an ever-changing employment law regime. In addition, she has successfully conducted a broad range of high-value cases for both Respondents and Claimants including TUPE, sex, disability and race discrimination, unfair dismissal, whistle blowing, and breach of contract claims. Beth’s pre-law commercial experience has greatly informed her legal career, and she has worked with a broad range of clients in the education and charities sector, providing employment and more general commercial advice to primary, secondary and special needs schools and other charitable trusts.
Beth has acted on several high value Employment Tribunal cases on behalf of independent Schools relating to issues such as unfair dismissal, breach of contract, sex discrimination and disability discrimination, and also represented teaching and non-teaching Claimant clients employed in the sector in actions relating to a wide range of employment law issues.

Ashton Carter, Trainee Solicitor
Ashton has worked with charitable companies and organisations helping to incorporate their subsidiary companies and dealing with their overall constitution (including Articles and Memorandum of Association) as well as corporate governance aspects of the charitable organisation.
Ashton has also worked as part of a team working for local schools on various matters, including research into potential litigation as well as drafting of documentation.
He has the general experience of drafting various agreements, contracts and terms and conditions as well as drafting company incorporation documents including articles and memorandum of association and instruments of government.

Cate Hammett, Paralegal
Cate is a paralegal in the employment team. She studied for an English and History degree at the University of Hertfordshire and gained her BA in 2005 and is currently undertaking her solicitors qualifying exams. Cate has worked with a variety of employment matters at FJG from drafting employment contracts to creating employee handbooks. She has also assisted with projects concerning independent school clients.
