Changing names

After registering a civil partnership, one partner might want to change their surname to that of their partner. Alternatively, a couple may choose to hyphenate their surnames. Government departments and agencies such as the Passport Agency and the DVLA will accept civil partnership certificates in the same way that they accept marriage certificates as evidence for changing surnames. Private companies such as banks or insurance companies may require a different standard of proof. It is up to the individuals to contact organisations which hold personal data on them, if they wish to change their surname.
