Couples will need to attend their local register office to register their
intent to apply for a civil partnership.
Identification documents will need to be produced and a legal form completed
and signed by both parties.
There will then be a minimum waiting period of 15 days, during which details
contained in the notice will be
publicised. This can be by paper copy and on
line.
To register as civil
partners, a couple must sign the civil partnership document:
- at the invitation of, and in the presence of, a civil partnership registrar;
- in the presence of each other and two witnesses.
There will be procedures in place to reduce the 15 day waiting period where
there are compelling reasons to do so, and for a formation to take place at the
residence of someone who is housebound, detained or seriously ill and not
expected to recover.
Although there is a minimum 15-day waiting period after the notice of
intention is given, the registration of a civil partnership can take place up to
a year after that.
