Colchester United indoor pitch kicks off!
30 January 2015 by Lucinda Stacey
Colchester United launched a state-of-the-art indoor dome which has been constructed in line with the Premier League’s Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) requirements. The criteria set by the Premier League required an indoor surface to be built before the end of 2014 to cement Colchester United’s Category Two status. The indoor pitch was launched on Saturday the 17th of January 2015 after works were carried out over the last few months in readiness for its launch.
Chairman Robbie Cowling commented that “the build has been about three months, which is remarkably quick, but we are working to the deadline set by the Premier League.” With this kind of pressure from the Premier League and with nearly £80,000 spent on the pitch alone, the new pitch had to live up to the high standard set. The pitch situated at Warriors’ Rest, which is half a mile from Colchester United’s training ground at Florence Park, features a 70×50 surface and will be used by the Colchester United first team, along with their academy players and local youth sides. The Chairman passed comment that “The professionals will be in there if there’s snow or if we need to protect the pitches over at Florence Park.” The new launch has clearly been timed to perfection what with the current cold temperatures. Mr Cowling believes that the indoor pitch will generate more income for the club but will also benefit the local community.
The official opening on the 17th of January 2015 saw Chairman Robbie Cowling and the Academy Manager Tony Ashby declare the facility open, whilst also welcoming Brendan Walsh, County Development Manager at the Essex FA. Also in attendance were Colchester United’s first team members Frankie Kent, Drey Wright and Tosin Olufemi. The big event was followed by a round robin tournament which featured players from Colchester United’s Academy U9s, our Football in the Community U10s and Tiptree Jobserve’s U10s.
