Knock Out News in Chelmsford!
13 February 2015 by Lucinda Stacey
Chelmsford Amateur Boxing Club starts the year off with a bang. It has been presented with a cheque for £13,300 by Essex County Council to complete phase two of their gym refurbishment. The cheque was handed over to the club on Sunday the 8th February by County Councillor Roger Hirst who is the cabinet member for customer services, libraries, planning and the environment.
The cash was raised through the council’s Community Initiatives Fund. For those of you who are unaware of what the Initiatives Fund is, it is a small grants scheme funded by the Council which is designed to fund community projects. The projects are to ‘create, procure or develop new community assets, enhance existing community assets and enhance or develop initiatives that strengthen the community’. The fund has been designed to be as flexible and responsive as possible to the needs of the community.
Local Councillor Roger Hirst stated that “the fund is an excellent example of how Essex County Council is supporting communities to help themselves.” He went on further to say that “by increasing the opportunities for local residents, community groups and volunteers individually to shape their local facilities and undertake new ventures, we will see them make Essex an even better place to live and work than it is today.”
Chelmsford Amateur Boxing Club, which is fully regulated and affiliated to The Amateur Boxing Association of England, has also been busy with fund raising. The club presented the Helen Rollason Heal Cancer Charity with a cheque for £2,500 which was raised from a recent dinner show. The club secretary Ray Cooper commented that “We support this great charity as it has deep-rooted significance to many members of our club past and present.”
It is refreshing to see the community supporting charities and the Chelmsford Amateur Boxing Club going from strength to strength.
Chelmsford Amateur Boxing Club demonstrates an example of a valued asset to the community which has received outside backing to help fund renovations.
