June 2018 – the month to make a Will and support a good cause
30 May 2018 by James Bird
Making a Will is often a topic which whenever it comes up people will say “I should really make one” or “I should really check mine as I made it a long time ago”. Whilst many do not wish to talk about such events and contemplating their estate once they are gone, it cannot be expressed just how important a Will is for those left behind. Not only does it enable you to have control over where your assets pass, but it makes the process of dealing with an estate so much easier for loved ones.
As a firm of solicitors, we always emphasise the importance of having a Will and ensuring that it is kept up to date once made. Circumstances change and sometimes an old Will does not reflect current wishes or those who do not have a Will leave it to the absolute last minute to address.
We always encourage anyone to make a Will but next month a very important campaign is taking place and it is something which we would encourage everyone to take part in. St Helena Hospice are running their Wills campaign whereby throughout the month of June, you can make a Will and instead of paying the solicitors fees, you make a donation to St Helena Hospice. Not only does this mean that the Wills are cheaper than usual, but you are also donating to an incredibly worthy cause. The recommended minimum donation for the campaign is £100 for a single Will and £175 for mirror Wills (ie simple Wills for couples which have generally similar terms). Of course, it is for a charity so if you wish to donate more then no doubt that would be highly appreciated.
Many will be aware of the work which St Helena Hospice does with patients providing care for them towards the end of their time when they have been diagnosed with serious illnesses. However, St Helena Hospice helps with many more aspects ranging from counselling services for family members to providing at-home care. They have a wide range of services provided by professionals but as a charity, fundraising and donations are the only way they can continue to operate. For more information about the services, they offer click here.
The Wills Campaign is just one of their events which has been running for numerous years now and which FJG have strongly supported throughout. If you still do not have a Will and want to make one whilst supporting a good cause then this is something you should definitely participate in. For more information about their campaign, please visit the St Helena Hospice website here.
