Covid-19 – How to register a death during the pandemic?

1 April 2020 by Jane Golding

      Jane Golding
      Births, Deaths, Marriages

You can register a death and book an appointment during the Coronavirus pandemic, the Registration service remains open but on a restricted basis. Three Registration Offices across Essex are open to register deaths and stillbirths only, these are Chelmsford, Colchester, and Harlow registration offices. All other offices are closed due to government instructions to close public libraries and gathering places, this includes the Basildon registration office.

To book an appointment, you can call: 0345 603 7632 or email: [email protected]

How to register a birth or stillbirth during the Coronavirus pandemic

Appointments to register a birth are being deferred. You can make a claim for child benefit or universal credit before the registration of a birth. You can book an appointment to register a stillbirth by calling – 0345 603 7632. More information about registering a birth and parental responsibility at this time can be found in our Family Law blog.

How to register a marriage or civil partnership during the current Coronavirus pandemic

If you have a ceremony due to take place in the coming weeks, the Registration team will contact you. Appointments to give notice of marriage or civil partnerships are being deferred. New bookings for marriages or civil partnerships will not take place until 1st July 2020. New ceremonies will not take place before 1st September 2020. This is to allow time for coronavirus to peak and for rescheduling booked ceremonies. Weddings at Cressing Temple Barns and Essex Record Office are suspended until the end of June 2020. No new bookings will be taken for 2020 and 2021 at this time.

If Fisher Jones Greenwood can assist you with the process and procedures of registering a death or any legal issues relating to the Coronavirus pandemic, please contact us on 01206 700113 or email [email protected]
