Accidents at work – the statistics

There is no denying that most jobs carry an element of stress and certain professions, such as construction, can be highly dangerous. However, accidents and illnesses in the workplace tend to happen when safety measures are not followed. The health and safety executive recently released new statistics showing that 1.3 million working people are suffering from a work related illness here in the UK. Their records show that human health/social work was the industry with the highest work related illness rate.
In addition, there were 609,000 injuries that occurred in the workplace between 2016 and 2017, with agriculture, forestry, and fishing being the industry with the most workplace injuries.
The HSE statistics show that the majority of non-fatal injuries are as a result of handling, lifting and carrying accidents. These accidents accounted for 20% with slip, trip, and fall accidents accounting for 18%.
Fatal accidents at work are thankfully a rare event but they still occur. There was a total of 137 workers killed at work between 2016 and 2017. Almost half of the fatal injuries over the last five years were accounted for by just two different accidents, falls from height and being struck by a moving vehicle.
Falls from height account for an average of 40 fatal injuries per year. Nearly half of all fall from height deaths over the last 5 years were in the construction sector suggesting that more needs to be done to make the industry safer.
