FJG Become Dementia Friends
23 June 2015 by Susanne Grimwade
Staff from local law firm Fisher Jones Greenwood LLP have taken part in a dementia awareness session to become ‘Dementia Friends’
Seven members of the Wills & Probate team took part in the session, held by Ray Canham, a trained volunteer Dementia Friends Champion. Mr Canham took the group through practical exercises helping to identify causes and recognize different types of dementia. They also looked at how to support people in the community who have dementia.
The Dementia Friends scheme is an Alzheimer’s Society initiative which is designed to help change the way people think, talk and act about dementia. It aims to ultimately create more dementia-friendly communities.
Susanne Grimwade, head of the Wills & Probate team commented, “Dementia Friends is an incredibly important initiative and one that can make a huge difference to many people in the UK. Dementia isn’t just losing your memory, it can affect everyday tasks but with the right support it’s possible to live well. By being Dementia Friends we can help to provide that support and help to make our community a dementia-friendly one”.
Ray Canham, Dementia Friends Champion, who delivered the session as part of an initiative by CHP Foundations added, “Getting local business involved in Dementia Friends is a great way to spread support and understanding. There’s more to a person than the dementia and with the right support, people can and do take an active role in life. Dementia Friends isn’t just about understanding, but turning that into action and every action counts.”
