A recent dementia hotspot report was issued by Alzheimer’s Research UK. The report shows that Clacton on Sea has the third highest prevalence of dementia per head of population at 24 cases per 1,000 (jointly with North Norfolk and Worthing West).
In the UK it is estimated that around 850,000 people have dementia. This figure is expected to rise to one million by 2025 because people are living longer. Many people simply do not realise that dementia is caused by diseases and it is not an inevitable part of ageing. Dementia is a term that describes a class of symptoms including memory loss and difficulties with day to day tasks such as problem-solving or language. Common causes are Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia.
Sadly at some point, people with dementia will reach the stage where they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves. At this point, another person (eg a family member) may need to make decisions on their behalf. A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal mechanism to achieve this.
