It was back in 1966 that the problem of crushed crisps was solved for the manufacturers of Pringles, Procter & Gamble. Mr Fred Baur, a “food storage technician” and the mind behind the famous Pringles can design, received a patent for his innovative design in 1970 which transformed the way in which crisps were packaged.
When he died in 2008 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s, Baur’s children recalled a conversation they had with their father in the 80s whereby he had expressed the wish that he be buried in the can that he had designed.
Baur’s eldest son, Larry, told Time magazine that the family had stopped at Walgreen’s for a can of Pringles to bury their father’s ashes in, on the way to the funeral directors. According to Larry they had briefly debated what flavour to purchase, but had decided that the obvious answer was the Original flavour.
They filled the can with their father’s ashes and buried it with an urn containing the remainder of the ashes in his grave at the Springfield Township of Cincinnati, Baur’s hometown.
As the current strap line says, “You Don’t Just Eat’Em”….you can get buried in’em.
So whilst Baur’s family honoured his wishes, if you have any weird and wonderful plans yourself, or even if you think there might be disagreement amongst the family as to your funeral plans, then it is always best to record this in black and white in your Will.
