When deciding upon funeral wishes some people decide that they would like a humanist service, but what does ‘humanist’ actually mean?
For most the word would suggest a non-religious service and one that would not follow the standard route of a normal funeral.
When delving a bit further the definition of humanism simply means a belief that human needs and values are more important than religious beliefs, or the needs and desires of humans. A humanist will often reject the idea of a supernatural being such as God and will instead often class themselves as atheists.
A humanist service will be unique and specific to the wishes of the deceased. There are no set procedure or rules to follow meaning that each one can be quite different and personal. A celebrant will guide you through the service much like a vicar would. Services can include tributes to the deceased, readings and time for reflection. Quite often ‘normal’ dress code won’t be followed and instead it will be seen as an opportunity to celebrate the deceased’s life and bright colours will be worn.
