The court may order a section 37 report if there are concerns that a child may be at risk of significant harm. The report will be carried out by the local authority or an organisation called CAFCASS (Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service). The report may consider (but is not limited to) the following:

  • Whether a care or supervision order needs to be applied for
  • Does the child or their family require any further assistance
  • Does any further action need to be taken in respect of the child.

A section 37 report should be completed within 8 weeks, but it can be longer or shorter if the court orders a different timeframe. The report will be carried out by a qualified social worker with experience working with children and families.

If a section 37 report has been ordered, it is important that you fully engage with the local authority or CAFCASS to ensure that the report is reflective of your views, your current situation and any other information you feel should be reported with regards to the child. It is important that you take a section 37 report being ordered seriously and obtain legal advice as soon as possible.
