Anna Newell, Solicitor Apprentice in our Residential Property team gives us a glimpse into a typical day, where every task presents an opportunity for learning and growth in a fast-paced legal environment.
Morning Routine
My day as a solicitor apprentice in residential conveyancing begins with a quick review of my schedule. I start by organising my tasks and prioritising urgent matters. My tasks day to day ranging from completing dictation to attending client meetings.
Drafting Documents
A key part of my role is drafting documents, this could include contracts, letters, or other legal paperwork. Drafting requires a keen eye for detail and a thorough understanding of legal principles. I often refer to previous documents and templates, learning from the structure and language used by experienced solicitors. Each document I draft is reviewed by my supervisor, providing me with valuable feedback and insights.
Calls
Throughout the day, I handle a variety of phone calls. This is one of the most dynamic parts of my job. Clients, agents, Mortgage Brokers and other solicitors may call with queries about property transactions, seeking updates or clarification on legal matters. I ensure to listen carefully, provide accurate information, and reassure them about the progress of the case and helping where I can. Effective communication is key in residential conveyancing, I ensure I pass any information onto my colleagues and make notes on the file when necessary.
Research Tasks
Research is another significant aspect of my role. Whether it’s looking up case law, understanding new protocols, or finding precedents, research tasks help me build a solid foundation in my Residential Conveyancing knowledge. I use various legal databases and resources, learning how to navigate them efficiently. This not only aids in my current tasks but also prepares me for more complex legal challenges in the future.
Learning from Colleagues
One of the most rewarding parts of my apprenticeship is learning from my colleagues. The office environment is collaborative, and I often find myself asking questions and seeking advice from more experienced solicitors and other support staff. They share their knowledge generously, explaining intricate legal concepts and procedures. For instance, understanding how to exchange contracts is crucial in conveyancing, and my colleagues provide practical insights that go beyond textbooks.
High-Pace Environment
Working in residential conveyancing is undeniably fast paced. From tight deadlines to managing multiple cases simultaneously, the environment demands quick thinking and adaptability. Initially, finding your feet can be challenging, but the experience gained is invaluable. The exposure to a variety of tasks and the need to stay on top of ever-changing situations provide a learning curve like no other department. This dynamic setting equips you with skills that are essential for a successful legal career.
Lunch Break
Lunch is a time to recharge and to catch up with colleagues. We often take a step away from work and catch a breath. Maintaining work relationships is a key component to creating a positive and supportive work environment which enhances communication, collaboration and overall job satisfaction at Fisher Jones Greenwood.
Afternoon Tasks
The afternoon is usually reserved for more focused work. I might be involved in preparing for client meetings, organising files, or updating case management systems. Each task, no matter how small, contributes to the smooth operation of the conveyancing process. I also take this time to review my progress and write a to-do list for the next day.
End of the Day
As the day winds down, I ensure all tasks are completed or appropriately scheduled for the next day. I update my supervisor on the day’s progress and seek feedback on my work. Reflecting on the day’s activities helps me identify areas for improvement and set goals for my professional development.
Conclusion
Being a solicitor apprentice in residential conveyancing is a journey of continuous learning and growth. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities to develop my skills. From dictation and drafting documents to client calls and research tasks, every aspect of my role is integral to the conveyancing process. The support and guidance from my colleagues are invaluable, helping me become a competent and confident solicitor in the making.
