I have a confession to make. I am a sucker for 90’s nostalgia. Phew, that feels better to get that off my chest. Whether it be listening to a podcast about 90’s football (yes, such a thing does exist) or re watching old shows or movies from my childhood (not all of them have aged well), I always enjoy a walk down memory lane.
It is for this reason that I excitedly watched the “reboot” of the Rescue Rangers on Disney+. This tongue in cheek walk down memory lane, that is self-aware enough to poke fun at Disney’s attempt to reboot every old film or show, was a light-hearted way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
Disney+ is full of reboots. From Jungle Book to Beauty and the Beast to the Lion King, more and more of these films have had a modern makeover, or “CGI Surgery” as it is referred to in Rescue Rangers.
With any Disney film reboot, you cannot escape the nostalgic story line or the catchy songs. They continue to be a splash of colour that bring joy to many. However, have you ever noticed the darker side to a Disney film? Despite all the light-hearted entertainment they provided, they are not afraid to shy away from bigger issues, such as family tragedy and death.
Take the classic story of the Lion King, a film that has most likely caused many a child tears. Whether the reboot, the original or even the stage show, one thing remains contestant throughout. If not for Mustafa’s death, although we would have a much less traumatic film, it would not be the same movie and we might never learn “hakuna matata”.
No matter what life looks like, one thing does not change. Like Disney, do we need to be more open about addressing death? Ensuring that we have a Will in place and that we have sought advice about estate planning?
Death is never a fun thing to talk about, but if Disney can do it, so can we.
