Thanks to Microsoft, you may not have to wait much longer before holograms arrive in our homes. Microsoft has announced that they are developing new smart glasses which they have called the Microsoft “HoloLens”.
The device will allow users to see and hear three-dimensional holograms which are even able to interact with objects and the environment surrounding you.
Through the use of holograms we are able to expand the way in which we work with computers, as you don’t require a mouse or touch screen in order to issue commands. Instead, your voice and simple hand gestures will be used in order to interact with the device’s user interface.
Unlike virtual reality technologies, which completely immerse the user in a computer-generated world, the holograms created through Microsoft HoloLens are transparent, meaning that you can still see and interact with the world around you. The device’s processor is able to map your environment and allows you to pin the holograms to real physical surfaces…. Tom Cruise in Minority Report anyone?
One such use of this feature comes about through Microsoft’s acquisition of Mojang last year, which is the company behind the popular video game, Minecraft. The HoloLens technology would allow players to create elaborately designed buildings upon their own coffee table and with no connection to a computer required.
Some people were understandably sceptical about the £1.5bn which Microsoft spent on the acquisition. However, Microsoft’s latest fiscal report shows that the company’s revenue generated from video games has significantly increased since the acquisition, and Microsoft appear on course to break even on the acquisition by the end of 2015.
If the HoloLens is well-received by consumers there is potential for sales of the game to surge even higher and make Microsoft’s targets a reality.
The Microsoft HoloLens uses the new Windows 10 software and will be completely wireless; requiring no connection to either a phone or computer.
