Ashton Carter is a Solicitor and Partner in our Corporate and Commercial Team and studied Law at the University of Essex, graduating in 2008. He then went on to qualify from BPP Law School with a Commendation for the Legal Practice Course (LPC) in 2009 obtaining a commendation award in Business Law.
Ashton trained with Fisher Jones Greenwood LLP and qualified as a Solicitor in March 2013, being promoted to Partner in April 2015.
Ashton is particularly interested in corporate, commercial, company and partnership work, including specialising in corporate transactions involving both share and assets sales/purchases, mergers, acquisitions and disposals, management buy-outs, drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, corporate reorganisations and restructures.
Ashton also has a passion for working with charities and undertakes a considerable amount of charity work as well as providing independent legal advice in relation to business finance arrangements, mortgages, and guarantees.
Ashton has previously been a part of the ‘Consulting Room’ legal clinic in association with COLBEA Business Centre, aimed at providing new business start-ups and small/medium enterprises with free, initial legal advice. Ashton at the time combined this with his position as a trustee of a local charitable incorporation organisation to develop his passion and focus for ensuring the community in Colchester continues to prosper and continues its progressive growth.
Having been located in Essex for many years, Ashton has a particular affinity with the area, with a particular focus and interest in its expanding economy, new business start-ups, and small to medium enterprises in Essex and its surrounding areas, including London. Ashton also takes a keen interest in already well-established businesses, working on several projects focused on ensuring such businesses continue to grow and expand, diversify or otherwise adjust to ensure their business, profitability, and prosperity remain buoyant.
Ashton is recognised in the latest edition of Legal 500 where he is named as a ‘Next Generation Partner’ and has been since 2020 . He is also ranked Band 1 lawyer in the 2025 Chambers Directory, being described as ‘helpful, available and diligent in his approach’ and ‘always willing to help find the right way forward in any situation.’
