A busy and rewarding two years has seen me go from home education to Conveyancing Legal Secretary, and this is just the beginning.
Deciding what you want to do proves difficult for most people when leaving school and whilst I knew Law fuelled a passion I recognised, I knew that to build a career in the legal sector would be a challenge due to my lack of experience and qualifications. However, leaving education at 16 and achieving my GCSEs with one-to-one tuition and the occasional self-taught lessons taught me the importance of hard work and independence and through commitment and dedication, anything is possible.
The traditional route of College/University was not a suitable option for me. After researching the different paths and options available I came across the Apprenticeship scheme. I was extremely excited knowing that there was something out there suitable to achieve my career goal. An opportunity presented at FJG and I secured an interview with Paula Fowler, Managing Partner.
My time at Fisher Jones Greenwood Solicitors began…
I started my apprenticeship at FJG in October 2017 and immediately enrolled at CILEx and completed an induction in London, meeting other students conducting the same course and having the opportunity to experience, briefly, a worldwide Law firm.
My first role was a Post Room Assistant where I had to manage my workload to equally and effectively support all departments.
Beginning in the Post Room allowed me to build my confidence and learn the basics of working in a law firm. It gave me an insight into all the different departments and introduced me to all the aspects that come with being a member of staff at FJG.
My Level 2 Legal Administration studies ran alongside working full time, completing course work and exams, and internal training – this all took a great amount of self-dedication and motivation. Nevertheless, with a clear career plan in mind and continuous support from my colleagues at FJG, everything became achievable and manageable.
After 12-18 months I was offered a position as a legal secretary in the Conveyancing department where I am now supporting the new build team; working closely supporting two Fee Earners and helping out around the Conveyancing team where needed.
My 7 months in the Conveyancing department has been a great experience, working alongside some talented and friendly people that show passion in their work. The high demand of work within the Conveyancing department shows the importance of teamwork, which has been one of the many skills I have learned to develop during my time at FJG.
What is next?
I completed my Level 2 Legal Administration studies in June 2019 and am now hoping to get started on my Level 3 Paralegal course.
FJG have provided me with an unforgettable start to my future and I am extremely grateful to have been given the opportunity to start my career in such a way.
