August is National Road Victim Month. It’s a time to honour those who have lost their lives or been seriously injured on our roads—and to stand in solidarity with the families, friends, and communities left behind.
As solicitors, we see the human stories behind the headlines. We work closely with individuals and families navigating the aftermath of road traffic incidents—offering not just legal expertise, but clarity, compassion, and a steady hand when it’s needed most.
This month holds particular significance. It marks the anniversary of the UK’s first recorded road death, Bridget Driscoll, who was struck by a car in 1896, as well as the tragic death of Princess Diana in 1997. These events, though separated by more than a century, are united by a common thread: the sudden, life-altering impact of road collisions.
While remembrance is central to National Road Victim Month, it also calls us to act with purpose.
Why This Month Matters
Road traffic collisions remain one of the leading causes of death and serious injury in the UK. Behind every statistic is a person—a parent, a child, a colleague, a friend, and while progress has been made in road safety, there is still much to do.
This month is an opportunity to:
- Raise awareness of the devastating consequences of road incidents.
- Support those who have been affected—emotionally, physically, and financially.
- Advocate for safer roads, better infrastructure, and stronger legal protections.
- Urge all road users to exercise increased caution and take personal responsibility.
Our Role as Legal Professionals
At Fisher Jones Greenwood we are proud to support victims and their families with clear, honest legal advice. Whether it’s pursuing a personal injury claim, navigating insurance complexities, or seeking justice through the courts, we are here to help every step of the way.
We recognise that every case is unique. That’s why we take the time to listen, to understand, and to tailor our approach to each individual’s needs. Our goal is not only to secure fair outcomes, but to do so in a way that feels empowering and respectful.
What You Can Do
You don’t need to be a lawyer or a policymaker to make a difference. This August, we encourage everyone to:
- Reflect on your own road habits—whether you’re a driver, cyclist, or pedestrian.
- Support charities and organisations working to improve road safety.
- Use #NationalRoadVictimMonth to share personal stories and help raise awareness across social media platforms.
- Take part in local events or remembrance services in your area.
Even small actions like slowing down in residential areas or putting your phone away while driving can have a big impact.
