One of the most popular animated movies in box-office history, made by an American producer and director, once used the phrase and even generated a song entitled ‘Blame Canada’ to uphold its storyline premise.
It seems somewhat ironic, that in one of the most contentious presidential elections of all time, many of the residents of the United States of America, are now looking to flee for the Canadian border. So much so, that the Canadian immigration website crashed following a dramatic increase in traffic.
Such is the discontent amongst the America population for this presidential election, that no matter whether you are a Hillary or Trump supporter, drastic action appears to be on the horizon from the party that is unsuccessful in its campaign for the Whitehouse.
Never before has an election been tinged with dissatisfaction over both candidates from the general masses, with the election being dubbed colloquially as a vote between ‘the lesser of two evils’. Countless questions are likely to be asked as to how these two were placed on their march to Washington and why further candidates were not coming forward.
Stances of challenging the legality of votes by each candidate should they lose, may result in this election result dragging its heels even after the final vote is counted and recorded.
Promises of ‘building walls’ and ‘stringent immigration controls’ from the respective parties further deepened the discontent amongst the US population, as the world waited with baited breath to learn the outcome.
At the end of this often bitter presidential race, Donald Trump has now been elected as the next president of the United States of America – One of the highest and most important positions in world politics. What this means for the rest of the world and closer to home, for the trade negotiations between the UK and US as a by-product of our impending Brexit, remains to be seen. What is clear though is that it will certainly take time for the full impact of the decision to be fully known.
One thing is for sure, with both parties stating they would challenge the legality of the vote should they lose, even once the outcome was decided, it is likely legal action will follow, along with calls for a re-count and then potentially, a re-vote on the decision.
It therefore looks set to be a busy time for the US Attorney General and countless US lawyers. Further action could follow if Mr Trump sees through a certain number of his promises which affect minority groups and nationalities. Injunctive relief is likely to be sought at the highest level in various instances and will no doubt be supported by formal discussions and forums within the US Senate.
The entire world now watches and waits for the fallout and full impact of one of the most contentious presidential campaigns of our generation. The ramifications of the election, in a year already-full of upheaval and discontent, remain to be seen.
However, in the illustrious words of outgoing US President Barack Obama: “no matter what happens, the sun will rise in the morning”. It just may be a little less bright in the sky, depending on your particular individual thoughts and preferences.
