Many of us do not like to think of death and the realisation that this will happen to us all at some point can be somewhat scary and unsettling. We sometimes like to think of ourselves as immortal so the thought of planning how we would like to leave our estate can be very daunting and easily put to the back of our minds. Speaking to a professional, friendly face will put you at ease and make the process as comfortable as possible for you.
Making a Will is something we often put off doing. However, it can be good look at it as a way of preserve our assets and ensuring that they go to the people we care about. So by making a Will, we can ensure that our families and friends are provided for after we have gone. There are important reasons for planning ahead and many factors can come into play depending on your circumstances.
These days family set ups and circumstances can often be complicated and sensitive subjects to approach. This is something that we are experts at advising on. Here at FJG we will sit down with you and explore all of the options available, offering solutions to any situations or concerns that may arise whether it be blended families, family fall outs, appointing guardians or even providing care for your pets. We’re here to give you legal advice with a conscience.
“But I don’t want to make a Will, what happens if I don’t?”
The consequences of not planning ahead will mean that you will have to fall on the reliance of the Intestacy rules. Although times have moved forward be assured that these rigid rules have not!
It is a common urban myth that if you have lived with your partner for many years and assume they are your “common law wife/husband” and that they will automatically inherit your estate but unfortunately this is not the case. Cohabitees are not provided for under the strict intestacy rules. Despite all best intentions this is just one example of falling short as a consequence of not having a valid Will and suffering under the rules.
What to do next
In the week of 30th May 2023 FJG are participating in a Wills scheme with St Nicholas Hospice in which we will waive our fees and instead ask you to make a donation to the charity. St Nicholas Hospice helps many families in their local community, providing advice and support to people in the final chapters of their life or living with long term illnesses.
We want to help you, and giving back to our local community is important to us too.
Take advantage of this opportunity and book your appointment with me, Kerri Turner, in our Sudbury Office by calling 01787 373 387 or emailing [email protected].
