The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) provided an update concerning Applications for Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) which was published on the 24th March 2020.

What changes have happened at the OPG because of COVID-19?

Due to the Coronavirus, staffing levels have been affected, which means that it might take longer than normal for the OPG to respond to calls and customer enquiries.

The OPG are regularly reviewing their position and the ability to operate might mean that their approach will change to reflect Government Advice and Guidelines.

The OPG have confirmed that they will continue to provide LPA services and this includes processing and the registering of LPAs. They aim to register LPA applications within 40 working days and are currently performing in line with that ambition. However, due to Coronavirus, this could change and might take longer than normal.

The OPG will endeavour to carry out a risk assessment of all new safeguarding referrals within 2 workings days and complete investigations within 70 working days. The OPG are ensuring the most serious and significant safeguarding risks are being prioritised at this time.

The OPG are working with colleagues across the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) including the Court of Protection to ensure that they can continue to offer the best level of protection and service they can for adults at risk.
