Following a separation, a common issue facing parents is deciding on the arrangements for their children over the school holiday periods. This requires good communication between the parents to enable them to reach an agreement.

It is generally best for parents to agree dates as early as possible to enable each parent to have time to make arrangements for when they will have their children. This should also help to keep the process of agreeing dates as stress free as possible.

Some parents share the time with their children equally, whilst others will agree to have a holiday week or two weeks each. Parents need to decide what arrangements best suit their family and, most importantly, their children.

Agreeing the arrangements for school holidays does not have to involve a Court application. Parents should try to agree the arrangements between themselves. If communication is proving difficult then family mediation is preferable to going to court

Reaching agreement will often require flexibility and understanding to take into account any commitments the other parent may have, for instance, with their work.

Children will often have many years of school holidays ahead to enjoy with their parents, and making positive arrangements for them is important for their future memories.
