For people seeking refuge in the UK, the journey does not end when they arrive. The legal system can be overwhelming and unforgiving. Refugee Week, held every June across the UK, sheds light on these challenges and celebrates the courage of those who face them. At Fisher Jones Greenwood, our Immigration team is here to offer clarity, care and committed support at every step.
Supporting Refugee Week speaks directly to our values as a firm. We believe that embracing diversity and protecting the vulnerable enriches not just our workplace but the wider communities we serve. Welcoming people seeking sanctuary is not just the right thing to do, it reflects the kind of society we want to help build.
That is why we are proud to have a dedicated Immigration department that supports asylum seekers and displaced individuals with expert legal advice. Legal support plays a vital role in helping people understand their rights, navigate complex processes and find stability. Without it, those fleeing violence or persecution may be left without a voice or a fair chance at safety.
This year’s Refugee Week theme, ‘Our Community is Our Superpower’, reminds us that when we come together with kindness and purpose, we can create real change. That principle is at the heart of everything we do at FJG, especially in our work with those rebuilding their lives from incredibly difficult circumstances.
Understanding their rights
Refugees may not be aware of their legal rights in a new country. Legal advice helps them understand what protections they are entitled to, how to access services like housing, healthcare and education, and how to avoid exploitation or unfair treatment.
Navigating the asylum process
The asylum process can be complicated and time sensitive. Legal professionals help refugees prepare and submit accurate applications, support them through interviews or hearings and improve their chances of a successful outcome.
Preventing mistakes with serious consequences
Even small mistakes in paperwork or missed deadlines can result in rejected applications, detention, deportation or family separation. Legal advisors help avoid these risks by making sure everything is completed properly and on time.
Accessing long term stability
Legal support also helps people apply for permanent residency or citizenship, reunite with loved ones and challenge unfair decisions or discrimination. Just knowing someone is on their side brings confidence and peace of mind during an already difficult journey.
Inside the journey – reflections from our Head of Immigration, Ashlee Campbell
I got into immigration law because I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives – and this field reminds me every day just how urgent and human that mission is. Refugee Week is a time to pause and reflect, but for us, the work is constant.
We meet people at some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives – fleeing war, persecution, or unimaginable hardship – and we help them navigate a system that can feel overwhelming and impersonal.
What still surprises me, even after all these years, is the strength and dignity our clients show in the face of so much uncertainty. The challenges are real: tight deadlines, complex legal hurdles, and heartbreaking stories. But the satisfaction of calling someone to say, ‘You’ve been granted asylum,’ or ‘Your family can join you,’ is indescribable. Those moments stay with you. They’re why we do what we do.
Refugee Week reminds us that behind every case is a person, a family, a future. And while the spotlight may last a week, our commitment to standing with refugees is unwavering, every single day of the year.
Here when you need us
FJG holds a Legal Aid contract which allows us to provide essential legal support for asylum applications, family reunification and appeals. We work alongside local councils, social services and charities to ensure that help reaches the people who need it most.
Refugee Week is a moment to reflect, but our commitment to supporting displaced individuals extends far beyond these seven days. At Fisher Jones Greenwood, we stand with refugees every day of the year, offering expert guidance, compassionate advocacy and a belief in every person’s right to safety and dignity.
