Transit visas are required by some people who are passing through the UK en-route to another country within 24 or 48 hours
From 1 December important changes are being made to airside and landside transit visa requirements, in order to make the rules for transit without a visa clearer and more consistent.
Airside transit refers to anyone flying to and from the same UK airport in one day but does not pass through UK border controls. Landside on the other hand, refers to anyone catching an onward flight from a different UK airport or who may need to pass through border control to check in.
However, some nationals require a visa to transit both airside and landside, these are known as Direct Airside Transit Visas nationals (DATV), while others only need a visa to transit landside, known as non-Direct Airside Transit Visas nationals (non-DATV).
To apply for a transit visa you must be:
- in transit to another country with enough funds and the intention to travel on
- able to prove you can enter that country
- able to show that the only purpose of your visit to the UK is transit
