For my 7 days at work experience at the end of year 10, I was lucky enough to spend a week in FJG’s Colchester office.
Straight out of the gates I was taken on a whirlwind tour of the office, in which I met many members of staff, all of whom were very kind people who made me feel welcome. Once I had been around the office I was given my own desk space, from where I would help with whatever job the commercial property team was working on at the time.
However, I wasn’t at my desk long because I did a stint in the post-room and did a bit of photocopying and participated in several jobs in and around the office, including archiving and undertaking research with the marketing team. I spent some time with George in the IT team and learned that he enjoys collecting tins of interesting foods…
I also spent time out of the office, accompanying James in the wills and probate team with a house call and went with Neil to the Clacton and Holland on Sea offices to deliver some post.
I was surprised with how much I was on my feet, as going into the experience, I must say I had an image in my head of spending lots of time sitting at a desk writing, typing etc. but after a couple of hours, I quickly realised this wouldn’t be the case. I obtained many useful skills and had many positive interactions during my time at FJG.
At the start of the week, I had very little to no clue what sort of career path I’m going to go down. I still wouldn’t be able to answer if you asked what I want to do when I’m older, but this week certainly has given me a lot to think about; a career in law is most certainly still on the table going into my GCSE year.
I would like to thank everyone at FJG for the experience.
