The Home Office announced on 31st October that they have ceased issuing physical Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs). This decision marks an important shift towards a fully digital immigration system making it easier for Government bodies to undertake their checks from within a centralised system and allow easier transition entering the UK border.
Transition to E-Visas
From now on, when an applicant receives a decision on their visa application, they will be directed to create an account on the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) portal to register for an “E-Visa.” It is crucial that this step is completed promptly upon receipt of the decision to avoid any delays or complications in proving immigration status.
Assistance for Applicants Without Passports
For applicants who do not hold a passport due to be stateless or entering the UK to seek refuge, the Home Office will create an account on their behalf. These applicants will receive detailed instructions on how to access their e-visa account, ensuring that everyone can transition smoothly to the new system.
Deadline for Registration
All visa holders must ensure that they create an account with UKVI to register for their E-Visa before 31st December 2024. This deadline is critical to ensure that all individuals can manage their immigration status digitally and avoid any potential issues evidencing their Immigration status in the UK.
Benefits of the Digital System
The e-visa system is designed to increase security by reducing the risks associated with physical documents, as these documents are easily lost, stolen and used for fraudulent activity. It will make it easier for visa holders, to manage and prove their immigration status online via the online portal
Current BRP Holders
BRP holders should have already set up a UKVI account to access their e-visa. If an Applicant has not yet done this then it is strongly advised that this is done as soon as possible. As it is expect that the transition period should be completed by the 31st December 2024. It is suggested that those who have completed the process should still keep their physical BRP when traveling outside of the UK.

The end of BRP’s being issued marks a major step in the Home Office’s transition to a digital immigration system. This change is set to make immigration processes easier, making it more convenient to visa holder but to also enhance security for both the individual and the Government.
