Christmas is fast approaching and although for many this means excitement, fun, laughter and endless joy….statistics show that it almost one of the most dangerous times of year.
Here are some of the most common causes as recorded by The Society of Accidents:
- Christmas Tree and Decorations.
Approximately 1,000 people are injured by their tree every year while putting it up or decorating the same.
- Fairy Lights
An additional 350 people are injured by Christmas Tree lights each year, including falling while putting them up, children swallowing bulbs and, most common of all, electric shocks.
- Household Mishaps
Accidents at home were 15% above the average last year most due to falls, fire and choking, the majority of them occurring around the Christmas season.
- Alcohol Consumption
During the festive season, we all tend to get a bit carried away and that includes alcohol consumption. Brits tend to drink 41% more in December than the annual monthly average. Hospital Admittance increases with acute intoxication over Christmas Day and New Year.
- Presents
Christmas Day accidents include parents accidentally stabbing themselves with scissors, people cutting themselves with knives while curling ribbons and people tripping over packaging and wrapping paper.
